By many accounts, Purdue doesn’t compare well with its Big 10 peers when it comes to underrepresented minority student enrollment and success. During the Spring 2015 semester, African American, Pacific Islander, Native American, Hispanic and multi-racial students made up only 11.5-percent of the school’s student body.

According to census data, those same groups, minus those who identify as multi-racial, comprise more than 18-percent of the state’s total population.

West Lafayette residents objected after the Tippecanoe Area Plan Commission last week recommended approval of an apartment complex aimed at students to be built northwest of campus. However, the university’s plan to increase enrollment could mean more such battles are on the horizon.

Purdue University’s Board of Trustees is considering changing promotion and tenure criteria for the first time in forty years.

Provost Deba Dutta says the changes will incorporate the results of the Gallup-Purdue Index, which found that Purdue alumni were less likely than other graduates to have felt mentored or cared for by faculty while in school.

Dutta told the Board Thursday the proposed promotion and tenure modifications would emphasize mentoring at-risk students, innovating teaching, and engaging undergraduates in research.

Purdue currently has a “Dean of Students,” as many colleges do. But in the early part of the 20th Century, it had a “Dean of Women” – a position held, in succession, by several women who shaped both the job and the way female students were seen at the school.

That position is the subject of Angie Klink’s book “The Dean’s Bible,” which itself is the subject of this week’s book review by West Lafayette Public Library Director Nick Schenkel.

Purdue President Mitch Daniels will ask the school's trustees to extend the school's tuition freeze and allocate 3.5-percent more for salaries in the coming year.

The requests are subject to trustee approval, but Daniels tells WBAA he doesn't expect any roadblocks.

Biggest Increase In The Big Ten?

The salary increase is considerably more than Purdue employees have received in recent years, but there are several conditions.

More than half a dozen university presidents have penned open letters opposing the Religious Freedom Restoration Act, or RFRA.

“I had been watching the law develop and its repercussions over a couple days and I felt personally very strong about it," says DePauw University President Brian Casey. Like most, Casey's letter is personal – addressed as much from the administrator as from the university.

Governor Mike Pence plans to increase performance pay for teachers, but some argue the policy he outlined in Tuesday’s State of the State address is not in teachers’ best interests.

Purdue political scientist Robert Browning says the policy may be a way to pacify both conservatives who favor performance pay over raises, but still give pay increases to the 90-percent of teachers who qualify for bonuses because the state regards them as “effective”.

A Purdue economist says President Obama’s push to offer two years of government-funded tuition at community colleges may backfire.

The President will seek approval from Congress to offer two years of federal and state-funded community college, with the federal government paying for three-fourths of tuition and states pays the remainder.

At least one West Lafayette textbook retailer says he’s not happy with Wednesday’s announcement of an agreement between Purdue University and Amazon.com.

Tom Frey runs University Bookstore, which sits across the street from the Purdue Memorial Union, but isn’t the school’s official textbook retailer. In the spring, Amazon will open a physical storefront in the Union.

Frey says it’s the latest salvo in an ongoing battle between the internet company and the National Association of College Stores, of which he’s a member.

A pair of Purdue aviation students is racing across the country, just like a famous Purdue instructor used to more than seven decades ago.

Pilot Rachel Borsa and co-pilot Haley Myers are competing in the annual Air Race Classic, a race limited to female pilots. The four-day race began Monday in California and ends in Pennsylvania on Thursday, though the first plane to arrive will not necessarily be the winner.
