Pilot Logo Chosen For Lafayette Aviators Baseball Team

When the inaugural season of Lafayette’s Prospect League baseball franchise takes off June 1, players and fans will be sporting the graphic image of an aviator.

Team owner Mike Zimmerman says fans propelled the pilot to the top during a week-long social media campaign that also included images of an airplane and an aircraft engine.

The logo unveiling on Thursday followed last week’s announcement that fans voted to name the team the Aviators, a nod to Purdue University’s role in aviation history, as well as modern-day aircraft equipment manufacturers Alcoa and GE Aviation.

Some questions for Purdue's leader this month:

There was a lot of talk at the GE Aviation groundbreaking this week that Purdue grads might have something of an inside track to jobs there, since they’ll likely be high-skill positions. Can the university develop some kind of a pipeline there for those students who might qualify?

The trustees last week approved the merger of the Calumet and North Central campuses into Purdue Northwest. What kinds of savings might that reap for the school’s overall bottom line?

Officials from General Electric joined a bevy of elected leaders Monday to break ground on a $100 million plant that will eventually produce jet engines.

The GE Aviation facility is slated to open by 2016 and could start hiring workers as soon as next year.

Lafayette Mayor Tony Roswarski insists because it located in his city, GE won’t face the same dearth of qualified workers many companies are grappling with.

Indiana governor Mike Pence will be at the Purdue Airport tomorrow for what is being characterized as a "major jobs announcement."

Our partners at Inside Indiana Business are reporting that GE Aviation will locate a jet aircraft engine operation in Lafayette.

It would be the company's first-ever production facility in Indiana.

GE Aviation produces large and small jet engines for commercial and military aircraft, and avionics, electric power, and mechanical systems for aircraft.
