New Lafayette Family YMCA picks up another donation

More information is coming out about a new facility for the Lafayette Family YMCA. Details of the aquatic center were revealed Thursday when the organization announced a $50,000 gift from Lafayette Savings Bank for the project.

YMCA Executive Director Paul Cramer says there will be a family pool, an eight-lane competitive pool, slides and fountains. He says the bank’s gift shows its commitment to the community.

“The (bank's) gift allows us to purchase three different items – two indoor, aquatic climbing walls and a one meter diving platform. So, they’re great venues for the kids to learn how to swim and also get involved and have physical fitness activities.”

He says there’s no timeline for construction yet, because the fundraising effort is ongoing.

“We haven’t gone to the community in a broader campaign. We’re talking to specific donors and businesses right now, but the enthusiasm is contagious and the atmosphere is right. And if it’s for kids and families, and developing a stronger community – people really want to grab a hold of that.”

The 175,000 square foot facility is part of a combined effort called Intersection Connection. The building will house the YMCA, Junior Achievement and an IU Health Arnett clinic. It will be built on property adjacent to Ivy Tech on South Creasy Lane.

Lafayette Savings Bank President and CEO Randy Williams hopes the donation helps the collaborative effort.

“It all makes sense. Ivy Tech has a lot of single parents who take classes and need childcare, and with the Y being right there. It seems like a perfect opportunity for us to participate.”

Williams says this is the largest gift the bank has given since he started in 2001.
