Lafayette takes first step to annex land on SE side

Lafayette is moving forward with efforts to annex three parcels of land.

City council members approved resolutions to take over land near Saint Elizabeth East, IU Arnett Hospital, and a section of Veterans Memorial Parkway at U.S. 52.

Mayor Tony Roswarski says much of the land being annexed is undeveloped.

"We want to get a good strategic plan in there for infrastructure, for roads, for drainage, for zoning to make sure that as things develop, they complement the city, they add to the type of growth that we want to have for the city."

He thinks tax revenues will make the annexed sectors profitable from the get go.

"Going forward, that will probably even increase, because we look at the type of development that we hope will happen there as we lay out that strategic plan and what those revenues will be in relationship to the services."

Roswarski says plans for infrastructure improvements in the areas should promote additional growth.

Residents have the chance to comment on the annexation at a public hearing August 16th.

The areas could become part of the city as soon as January of next year. The city’s population would increase by roughly 1,500 residents if the annexations take effect.
