Writing in the English language seems like it shouldn't be too difficult a task. We speak it every day, so piecing words together to form a story should be easy. Author Ursula K. Le Guin begs to differ, saying writers sometimes try too hard to spice up their stories. She prefers to stick to the basics, like condensing adjective-laden phrases or simply letting the story flow instead of trying to control it. In Steering the Craft: A 21st Century Guide to Sailing the Sea of Story, Le Guin offers strategies for writers (and readers) to improve their writing skills, and ultimately find more enjoyment in the English language.
