A report from a national healthcare advocacy group shows that nearly five hundred Hoosiers died as a result of not having health insurance in 2010.

The number of uninsured Americans ages 25 to 64 hit an all-time high in 2010, the most recent year for which data is available.  And using a formula developed by a national research institute, a study by Families USA shows that more than 26 thousand people died as a result.

Executive Director Ron Pollack says the cost of a lack of health insurance is often lost in the national debate.

Rokita touts Red Tape Rollback success

May 21, 2012

Government is overreaching.

That’s the message of Indiana Congressman Todd Rokita.

The fourth district U.S representative is pushing for less government regulation.

He started an effort last year called operation Red Tape Rollback and says the first twelve months have resulted in 18 successes.

Rokita says successes are defined by stopping, delaying, or writing a bill to halt regulations, but does not necessarily mean there was a change to a law.

Democrat Tara Nelson will be the party’s nominee in the 4th Congressional District.

She won 58% of the vote over Lester Moore in Tuesday’s Primary.

Nelson thinks the General Election race against incumbent Republican Todd Rokita will be tough. However, she feels prepared to take her message to voters.

Bowman off 4th Congressional District ballot

Apr 30, 2012

A candidate in the Fourth Congressional District race is being kicked off the November ballot.

The Libertarian Party elected to remove Joe Bowman’s name after it was discovered that he lied about his criminal record when registering for the nomination.

The State Central Committee notes that the Lafayette resident “misrepresented” himself at the state convention and rescinded his bid for the seat.

Party officials are seeking a replacement candidate now.  They have until June 30th to do so.

GLC preparing for Washington, D.C. trip

Feb 21, 2012

A group from the Lafayette area is preparing to meet with some of Indiana’s Congressional delegation February 29 - March 2.

They hope to share some of their goals with such lawmakers as Senator Dick Lugar and Congressman Mike Pence.

Tippecanoe County Councilman Dave Williams chairs the Federal Government Committee for Greater Lafayette Commerce. He says the goal of these annual trips is to plant seeds with lawmakers, and to come together locally to address common needs.

Lafayette area Congressman Todd Rokita cast a “no” vote for the extension of the payroll tax cut. The 4th District Republican was joined by two other House members and Senator Dan Coats.

Rokita opposed the bill because he says it will hurt the country in the long run.
