Unemployment rate improves for state in October

The private sector added 7,700 new jobs in Indiana last month. That growth is the largest monthly jobs gain since May. It also drops the state’s unemployment rate to 8%, down 0.2% from September.

The Indiana Department of Workforce Development reports private sector employment is roughly 96% of what it was in 2007 before the recession.

Locally, unemployment increased 0.1% in Lafayette and West Lafayette to 7.1% and 4.7%, respectively.

July unemployment up for IN, mixed locally

Indiana’s unemployment rate rose slightly during July. The latest figures show the percentage of Hoosiers looking for work went from eight in June to 8.2 last month.

In Tippecanoe County, unemployment dropped from 8% to 7.7%. Lafayette’s jobless rate rose 0.1% to 8.4%. West Lafayette’s figure stands at 5.8%, which is down slightly from June.

Despite the increase for Lafayette, unemployment in the city is 1% better than it was a year ago.
