School Financial Indicator Committee Meets This Week

Under a bill passed earlier this year, the state plans to keep closer tabs on financially struggling schools. A committee meets this week, to discuss which financial risk factors the state might monitor as part of that plan.

Lawmakers approved a hotly debated school financial management bill during the special session Monday.

House Bill 1315 aims to prevent more school financial problems, gives Ball State University control of Muncie schools, and changes rules for those in Gary. Legislators failed to pass the bill during the regular session earlier this year.

Gary Schools Strikes Deal with IRS, Settles $7M In Debt

A new deal between Gary Community Schools and the Internal Revenue Service will provide some relief as leaders continue to address a complex financial situation. The deal comes as the state also considers another loan for the community’s schools.

A new state report shows the number of students who transfer in or out of the school corporation boundary they reside in to attend other districts, charter schools or private schools.

The Public Corporation Transfer Report was created by a 2017 state law. The intent is to offer a better understanding of the mobility of students living within a school corporation’s boundary, according to the Indiana Department of Education who compiled and released it.

Charter Schools USA could relinquish control of three Indianapolis schools in 2020 if the State Board of Education approves a proposal next week. Updated contracts between the Florida-based company and the state would require a transition of the schools back to control of Indianapolis Public Schools in three years.

As two seats sit vacant on Indiana’s education policy-creating body, the state’s highest-ranking education official is concerned.

As Gary Community Schools prepares for a state-hired emergency manager to take control, the seat on the state education board that represents the district remains vacant.

The same goes for East Chicago Schools as it faces a lead contamination crisis in the community.
