Nov 13, 2017

President Donald Trump announced the nomination of a former Eli Lilly executive as Health and Human Services Secretary Monday. Alex Azar is the latest Hoosier headed to Washington for a post in the federal health sector.

President Donald Trump is Japan this week and told Japanese business leaders they should make more cars in the U.S., and import less. He also thanked companies that already do business in America, including ones with a huge footprint in Indiana.

Stakeholders in Indiana are already weighing the GOP tax plan’s potential effect on workers.

Indiana Manufacturers Association lobbyist Andrew Berger says the plan’s most important pillar is its 20 percent corporate tax rate. He says it’ll let businesses make decisions about growing and investing based on what really matters.

“Not, ‘how do I best effectuate my tax liability?’” he says. “That’s what we’re trying to get out of this investment decision-making process.”

More than 100 protesters gathered outside the Indiana State Fairgrounds Wednesday to give President Donald Trump an unwelcome greeting to the Hoosier State.

Not allowed inside the fairgrounds gates, the protesters stood along the street outside, holding signs that featured messages protesting anything from health care to tax cuts for the wealthy.

Joseph Feasel traveled from Fort Wayne. He was enthusiastic about what he viewed as the protest’s diversity.

President Donald Trump called the GOP’s tax reform plan a “middle class miracle” as he rolled out details in a speech in Indianapolis Wednesday.

Trump said tax reforms passed in Indiana before and during Vice President Mike Pence’s time as governor should be a model for national change.

Indiana’s business community is waiting to see how federal tax reform plans, set for release next week, might impact their companies and workers.

At a roundtable in Indianapolis on Thursday, business leaders said they want to communicate to their workers and the public that lowering America’s corporate tax rate will be good for more than just executive paychecks.

At the beginning of this academic year, Purdue President Mitch Daniels sent a letter to the campus community in which he said Purdue would not stand for the kind of violence that struck Charlottesville, Virginia – another college town – just before the school year began.

But he’s also said that much of the violence on American college campuses in the last couple years has been instigated by left-wing student groups.

Indiana’s U.S. Senators say they want to dig more into the details of President Donald Trump’s strategy for the war in Afghanistan.

Trump addressed the nation Monday on America’s 16-year presence in the east Asian nation. He promised a focus on eliminating terrorists, not “nation-building.” The president also declined to set a timetable for the conflict’s de-escalation and announced an increase in troop numbers.

Former Democratic presidential candidate and Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders spoke with local union workers in Indianapolis Monday to kick off a Midwest tour.

Sanders' speech hit many of the same topics he focused on during the 2016 election – tuition-free college, universal healthcare and higher taxes for the wealthy.

President Donald Trump disbanded two of his economic advisory councils, after many members resigned in protest of his response to racist violence.

Trump tweeted Wednesday he was “ending” his Manufacturing Council and Strategic & Policy Forum, all made up of CEOs and other industry and workforce leaders.

Among those who resigned from the manufacturing group before that tweet were national AFL-CIO union president Richard Trumka and his chief of staff.
