The city of Lafayette expects to break ground on a new baseball stadium in 2019 – the same year the city had originally planned to complete the project.

Loeb Stadium, home to the Lafayette Aviators, is set to be completely redone – including rotating the field so a main entrance faces Main Street, and spectators won’t be looking into the sun.

American Structurepoint senior architect Dan McCloskey says the field will also be sunk about six feet.

The Lafayette Parks Department has a new snowmaker machine.

It’s a gift from the Olson Community Endowment Fund through the Community Foundation of Greater Lafayette.

Parks superintendent Claudine Laufman says the snowmaker replaces the old machine that quit working last year.

“Definitely a lot faster!” she says. “The maintenance workers who have been operating this machine say it’s really no comparison.”

Laufman says it takes about eight hours to cover the sledding hill at Murdock Park with the man-made snow.

The first phase of updating Loeb Stadium in Lafayette will begin soon.

The Park Board awarded contracts totaling $272,000 to Kettelhut Construction. Work includes building a new locker room off the right field side, where the grandstands were. Funding comes from the tax increment financing (TIF) district.

Senior Project Manager Alex Gonzalez says that project will be done over the winter.

Lafayette has new Parks Department superintendent

The city of Lafayette has named a new superintendent for its Parks Department.

Claudine Laufman is taking over the position, effective immediately.

She has been with the city for more than two decades, most recently as the director of the Columbian Park Zoo.

Mayor Tony Roswarski says Laufman will be charged with implementing ideas from the Parks Department’s recently completed five year master plan.

Roswarski says the Parks Department will also have a new Operations Manager.

An education center is the newest addition to Lafayette’s Columbian Park Zoo.

Construction for the roughly $400,000 facility began last year. It is located on the southwest corner of the zoo grounds.

Lafayette Parks Superintendent Ted Bumbleburg says now, all the classes and programs can be under one roof.

"We had two or three locations here in the park we were using for summer camps and classes. This brings the animals into the same building, which makes it a lot more convenient for patrons and staff."
