Advancing Manufacturing

Manufacturing companies all over the state have open positions and can’t find qualified workers to fill them. These jobs require specialized training because the new world of manufacturing requires more technology-based skills. So companies are finding new opportunities to teach them.

THE PROBLEM IN ONE MANUFACTURING TOWN

President Obama returned to Elkhart Wednesday seeking to bring a major part of his presidency full circle, trumpeting what he sees as the city's and the nation’s economic resurgence.

But as Indiana Public Broadcasting’s Brandon Smith reports, the president’s speech actually was more about looking forward than looking back.

A new initiative through the Region Four Workforce Board aims at connecting manufacturers and skilled workers.

It’s called “Advancing Manufacturing: We Have Jobs Here, We Have Training Here.” Besides listing open positions at companies in Tippecanoe and surrounding counties, it offers free training for job seekers.

Region 4 CEO Roger Feldhaus says the effort is in response to employers who have expressed concerns about the quality of the current labor pool.
