A display at Ivy Tech Community College is raising awareness about domestic violence.

The Clothesline Project features t-shirts with messages about abuse that were designed by victims of domestic violence.

Ivy Tech student Chelsea Gardner shared her story this morning on the Lafayette campus. She says she was physical abused by her father, raped during her time in the US Navy, and emotionally abused by her former husband.

Gardner says she left her husband for the sake of her two young children and is now in a happy, stable relationship.

She hopes her story inspires others to break the cycle of abuse.

Help is available locally through the YWCA Domestic Violence Prevention & Intervention program.

Director Jasmine Dowd says they can help develop an escape plan to keep victims safe when they choose to leave their abuser.
