The many different moving parts of West Lafayette's State Street redesign continue to turn, but one project has been delayed by two years.
Russell Street, on the Purdue campus, has been converted from a one-way to a two-way street as expected. And excavation work is underway to relocate a segment of Todd's Creek, just west of Airport Road.
However, Joint Management Team member Don Petersen said the widening of Airport Road west of the Purdue campus was pushed back after the Purdue Research Foundation and Browning Investments in June announced plans to develop the Purdue Innovation District, which is adjacent to Airport and McCormick roads.
Petersen said Browning officials asked for time to incorporate improvements to both roads into the plan they're developing for the 450-acre district.
"It didn't make sense to build Airport Road and then have it not correct with setbacks and widths of roads and things like that," he said. "So the request was made and granted to delay that until 2018 for construction."
Peterson says the project is still no track to be completed by January 2019. But the schedule change on Airport Road means that project will be added to the 2018's to-do list, including work on Stadium Avenue and McCormick Road.
