IN unemployment rate increases slightly in February

Indiana continued its trend of private sector job growth in February, adding 5,800 jobs. And for the second month in a row, the state’s labor force grew, including 3,800 unemployed Hoosiers who began looking for work again. That caused the jobless rateto increase a tenth of a percent to 8.7% for the month.

Unemployment dropped significantly in the cities of Lafayette and West Lafayette in February. Both experienced large increases during January. Now, unemployment is at 8.9% in Lafayette and 5.6% in West Lafayette.

The number of Hoosiers looking for a job last month dropped in Tippecanoe and most surrounding counties.

Unemployment rates did go up in Fountain and Warren counties, likely because of Harrison Steel’s decision to reduce its workforce by 10%. Fountain County’s rate is 12.2%, while it is 9.6% in Warren County.

Carroll, Clinton, Tippecanoe and White counties all saw their unemployment rates decline for the month by about 1% or more.
