Unemployment rate improves for state and region

Unemployment dropped slightly from August to September in Indiana. The rate fell one tenth of a percent to 8.2% for the month.

Unemployment is down half a percent or more in Tippecanoe and surrounding counties. The greatest drop from August to September was in Benton County, which saw a decline from 9.1% to 7.1% in the jobless rate.

Fountain County has the highest unemployment in the area, with 7.9% of the labor force looking for work. The county with the best jobs picture is Warren, with 6.1% unemployment. Tippecanoe’s is 6.4%.

Unemployment is now at 7% for Lafayette and 4.6% in West Lafayette. The improvement in the cities and county comes even as more people entered the labor force looking for work.

Below are the counties with their September unemployment rates and the change from August.

Benton:  7.1%,  - 2%

Carroll:  6.8%,  - .8%

Clinton:  7.1%,  - .6%

Fountain:  7.9%,  - .7%

Montgomery:  7.6%,  - .6%

Tippecanoe:  6.4%,  - .8%

Warren:  6.6%,  - .5%

White:  6.9%,  - .6%
