TSC students' "first day" after tornadoes

Community members are showing their support for the Tippecanoe School Corporation after tornadoes and storms damaged two of its facilities.

“The outpouring of support and the donations – not only in supplies and money, but also the volunteer efforts – have just really been beyond belief,” says Dr. Scott Hanback, superintendent. “They’re continuous. They’re fast and furious, and we really appreciate that.”

He says school supplies brought in by individuals and groups are helping teachers set up their classrooms, while cash donations are filling in the gap of what has not been donated.

The Lafayette Breakfast Optimist Club gave the corporation $8,500 to help cover any needs teachers have. Tom Bryja, club president, says members decided to help the students and teachers of Mintonye Elementary and Southwestern Middle schools at the urging of one of their board members.

“We looked at our capital fund, which we’ve used to build playgrounds in the past,” he says. “We raised this money, we have it in capital funds, let’s move it to this, because there’s nothing more needed right now.”

Bryja says this donation is in addition to what the club gives for its teachers’ grant program, which totals $6,500.

A TSC official says donations of school supplies or money can be made at the administration center in Lafayette at 21 Elston Road during business hours.

Hanback says the first day of school Monday for the displaced students at new locations went well. He thinks open houses at those two sites Sunday helped students make a smooth transition.

The corporation is using space at Wea Ridge Middle School and First Assembly Community Ministries for classes.
