Study examines Montgomery Co. history

The history of Montgomery County is highlighted in the Indiana Archeology journal.

A group from Ball State received a nearly 50-thousand-dollar grant from the Historic Preservation Fund to examine 915-acres of agricultural land northeast of Crawfordsville.

Archeologist Christine Keller says the information offers details on how early inhabitants of the area lived.

“This just gives people more information of perhaps where things may go," she said.  "It would help archeologist understand how the people lived there and where they lived. It's more than just the county.  It affects the whole region and state of Indiana of how these people functioned during a particular time period.”

The study resulted in 211 sites being added to the state’s archeological data base.

Keller says some of the sites are recommended for further research when the money becomes available.
