Purdue’s offense struggled from the start against Iowa. The Boilermakers pulled out to a 10-0 lead in the first half. But just three of those points came from the offense. The other 7 were the result of an interception in the first quarter by defensive back Frankie Williams, who ran the ball back 39 yards for a touchdown. Paul Griggs missed a 43-yard field goal in the first quarter, but made a 42-yard field goal in the second quarter to give Purdue a 10-0 lead with 11:48 to go in the half. But Iowa rallied, posting a touchdown and field goal of its own in the second quarter to even the score at 10-all at halftime.

On the offensive side for the Boilermakers, quarterback Danny Etling was sacked three times in the first half, with two of those sacks taking Purdue out of field goal range. Purdue’s defense held its own, though, keeping the Hawkeyes to just 41 rushing yards in the first half.

The offensive struggles continued for the Boilermakers in the second half, leaving the defense on the field most of the time. Iowa capitalized on the tiring Purdue defense, adding a touchdown in the third quarter and another in the fourth quarter to seal the 24-10 win. The Hawkeyes finished with 424 yards compared to just 156 total yards for Purdue's offense.

The Boilermakers fall to 2-3 overall, 0-1 in the Big Ten. They are on the road at Illinois (3-2, 0-1) Saturday.
