Four construction projects linked to Indiana‘s Bicentennial celebration next year have a green light from legislators.
Department of Administration Commissioner Jessica Robertson says some of the $53-million set aside for the event in the new state budget will be used to renovate the plaza on the east side of the statehouse, including the addition of a time capsule.
"Whether it's a series of plaques that memorialize characteristics of every county or tell a story in every county or profile people," says Robertson. "We're not quite sure yet what that could look like but that's kind of the concept, having something that folks could interact with."
Robertson says most of the appropriation for the Bicentennial will be used for a new state archives building that will have climate control and other precautions needed to preserve centuries-old papers.
The budget also funds construction of the first new state park inn in 76 years at North Liberty’s Potato Creek and an education center at the State Library which will be used by fourth graders who take class field trips to the statehouse.
