Prospect League Baseball Team Offically Dubbed 'Lafayette Aviators'

MKE Sports & Entertainment/Prospect League

Lafayette’s forthcoming Prospect League Baseball Team finally has an official name. In a hat-tip to Purdue University’s tradition of flight, the wooden-bat team has been officially dubbed the Lafayette Aviators.

The Lafayette Mayor’s Youth Council chose winning moniker from five finalists, which included the “Lafayette Legends” and the “Lafayette Ax Men.” The name was announced Thursday afternoon, along with three potential logos for the team. Residents can vote to choose their favorite—an engine, a plane or a pilot resplendent in a shearling jacket and bushy mustache—on social media.

The city finalized a deal in October leasing Lafayette’s Loeb Stadium to Milwaukee-based sports marketing firm MKE, which is developing the summer-league collegiate team. Play is scheduled to start next summer.

Mayor Tony Roswarski has said having a Prospect League Team at Loeb might help raise funds for construction on a new stadium in a few years.
