At least one expert is predicting a milder winter for much of the United States this year, although the outlook for Indiana is unclear.

Mike Halpert is the Acting Director for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association‘s Climate Prediction Center.

He says the upcoming winter season in Indiana actually has an equal chance of being warmer than normal or colder than normal.

But Halpert expects El Nino to bring warmer conditions to much of the U.S. this winter.

"Typically when we see El Nino, even the weaker ones, we see warmer conditions," says Halpert. "If not in the U.S., then in  parts of western and central Canada and Alaska. That makes the really cold arctic air that would have to spill down into our country from those areas less likely."

He also says Indiana is likely to be drier than normal this winter, while most of the southern states will see a wetter than normal season.

Halpert says much of the southern portion of the country is expected to be cooler than normal, while the west coast and far northern sections of the U.S. are trending toward a warmer than normal winter.
