Both the Indiana House and the Senate overwhelmingly approved bills that would block someone convicted of a drug crime from buying certain cold medicines without a prescription.
The legislation restricts access to pseudoephedrine, a key ingredient in the most common recipe for methamphetamine.
Senator Mike Young (R-Indianapolis) authored one of the bills, which he says targets people who threaten state efforts to reduce meth production. Indiana leads the nation in the number of meth labs dismantled by police.
“What we’re attempting to do is find a way that we can cut down on the meth problem in the state of Indiana and not harm our honest, law-abiding citizens,” he says.
The Senate legislation mirrors a House bill authored by Dave Frizzell (R-Marion County). Frizzell says the measures ensure law-abiding citizens aren’t inconvenienced.
