Lafayette to begin land acquisition for Sagamore Pkwy project

Work on a half a mile section of Sagamore Parkway in Lafayette could impact 16 property owners.

The road project is still in the design phase and runs from just north of McCarty Lane to just south of Main Street.

Engineering consultant Jeromy Grenard with American Structurepoint says they first thought the work would impact only seven parcels.

“We’re dealing with kind of a complicated issue with reacquisition of existing right-of-way along this corridor, and we’re trying to work through this with the Indiana Department of Transportation,” he says. “There’s a possibility that we could remove several of those parcels, and we’d only build for the parcels we acquire.”

The city will begin contacting land owners about purchasing small parts of their property, although a detention pond is planned on the lot at the northeast corner of Sagamore and McCarty. Assistant City Engineer Bob Foley says that will correct drainage problems near the intersection.

“Sagamore Parkway floods – it overflows into Wabash National’s parking lot, goes under their building (where it) combines with a system that they have and it floods their basements,” he says. “We need to deal with that, at least our overflow into that area.”

The estimated cost of land acquisition and associated legal work is $167,000.

Construction should begin next year and include more turn lanes on Sagamore Parkway and McCarty, new sidewalks and lighting, and landscaping.
