Lafayette area youth to plant community gardens

Several organizations are teaming up to help children plant gardens this summer.

Intersection Connection is hosting the Community Gardens, which includes kids from the YMCA after-school program, Junior Achievement and the McAllister Center.

The gardens are located at the Tippecanoe County Extension Office and Columbian Park Zoo.

Lafayette YMCA CEO Paul Cramer says those will benefit the children and the community. He says the project also meets Intersection Connection’s four goals.

“It’s all about the children and learning—health, income, education and social responsibility. This program is a first for Intersection Connection, and we hope it will become a model for future collaborations across the country."

Cramer says the produce from the gardens will be sold at the Lafayette Farmer’s Market and provide food for animals at the zoo.

Agriculture students from Ivy Tech Community College will be monitoring the gardens.
