Kokomo is set to get its own professional soccer team.

Mayor Greg Goodnight and MKE Sports & Entertainment made the announcement Monday. Goodnight says the games will begin next year.

“Basically the latter part of May through July and I think they play seven or eight home games, seven or eight away games,” Goodnight says.

He says there's no taxpayer investment and the squad will share a home stadium with the Kokomo Jackrabbits summer college league baseball team.

Goodnight says MKE Sports will hold a public "name the team" contest, with the winner receiving cash and team merchandise as a reward.

“MKE Sports that own the Kokomo Jackrabbits Baseball team are going to do a ‘name the team’ contest. One thousand dollars as well as free merchandise and free tickets to the person that can name the team and you can get on their website at kokomosoccer.com,” Goodnight says.
