INDOT Experiment Helps Drivers Make The Next Green Light

INDOT is testing something new on State Road 37 in Morgan County -- signs along that road that tell you how fast to go if you want to make the next green light.

As of now the signals are only located leading up to the State Road 144 intersection near Waverly.

INDOT spokesman Harry McGinity says the concept is rooted in safety and convenience, but that's only if drivers are willing to utilize it.

INDOT claims the signs make traffic more efficient by cutting down the number of drivers waiting for a light.

“You can go right through it. I think you’re actually saving time," he explains. "You’re sure saving some frustration and you’re saving the loss of sitting there at the red light idling and letting gas burn, letting emissions go up.”

The signs stay in constant communication with the upcoming traffic signal, and determine what speed you should drive to avoid having to stop at the light.

He likens it to a roundabout, where instead of waiting at a stop sign for your turn, traffic is constantly moving through the intersection.

In theory, if every driver were to utilize the signs and follow the recommended speed, nobody would have to stop -- ever -- though McGinity says that expectation is perhaps a bit unrealistic.

INDOT is hoping rear end crashes will decrease and differences in speed will be minimized. It also says the move could potentially increase fuel efficiency and help lower carbon emissions.

“So it’s a win-win situation all around to be able to do it," says McGinity. "Just give it a try and see if it works.”
