Indiana Beginning Process To Clean Up Voter Rolls

For the first time since 2006, Indiana is trying to pare down its list of voters to those who are active voters in the county in which they live.

Secretary of State Connie Lawson says postcards were mailed last week to all registered voters.

If the postcard is returned as undeliverable, the state will send out a second postcard.

If that card comes back, the state will mark the voter as inactive.

Lawson says cleaning up voter rolls helps ensure fair elections and also helps local governments save money, because officials base the number of voting machines and other materials on the number of eligible voters.

Until 2017 voters who are removed from the rolls can still show up at vote sites and do the paperwork just before they vote.

The state has allocated two-point-one-million dollars ($2.1) to purge its voter rolls.
