Hoosier Environmental Council offers webinar for businesses

The Hoosier Environmental Council wants to help businesses reduce their energy costs. The group is hosting a workshop that also aims at green job creation.

Policy advisor Kris Wheeler hopes the online event gives business owners new resources to improve their operations. She says buildings consume about 40% of the energy we use, so finding efficiencies will save money.

“Lighting is about 30% of where your energy goes, so just using energy-efficient lighting can have a significant impact, or the business owner can do a top-to-bottom, full building retrofit.”

The webinar also will discuss Property Assessed Clean Energy (PACE) bonds, which give business and industry another option for making energy improvements.

Wheeler hopes the program receives legislative approval next year. She says it’s similar to how local government finances projects with TIF districts.

“What it allows is low interest rates and terms – up to 20 years, depending on the life of the project – that allow businesses to have favorable financing for these projects.

“They are paid for through a property assessment mechanism,” she says.

Information about the workshop, which is Thursday noon – 1 p.m., is HERE.
