Those who work with young people in Tippecanoe County are being enlisted to fight human trafficking.
The Indiana Youth Institute is partnering with community organizations to sponsor a free workshop.
The West Indiana Nonprofit Resource Network is one of the groups that helped bring the program to the area.
Regional Director Jillian Miller says those who attend will learn how to identify and report the growing problem.
"It's not something that we can just overlook. We know this is happening. It's modern-day slavery is what it is. And if we can help recognize the signs it's just like any kind of abuse that's going on. If you recognize the signs and you're a concerned citizen, you can be that much more effective in helping to put an end to something where somebody's being exploited."
She says the workshop is geared toward volunteer and staff youth workers, but anyone may attend.
"We all need to do our part to know what's going on. We can’t just turn a blind eye to it, we can't be ignorant to it. And it goes far beyond just sex trafficking, it goes into other types of human trafficking too. So I think that's going to be a very informational and eye-opening workshop that we go to."
It’s Wednesday, September 26 at the Big Brothers Big Sisters office on Fortune Drive in Lafayette.
