IN gets job commitments from 219 companies in 2011

Columbus-based Cummins Incorporated and Indianapolis-based Angie’s List are two of 219 companies that have promised to create more jobs in Indiana. That’s according to the Indiana Economic Development Corporation (IEDC). But the number of job commitments is actually down from last year. IEDC officials say the companies have committed to create more than 19,000 new jobs over the next five years. That number is actually four thousand lower than last year, but spokesperson Katelyn Hancock says it’s still good news.

“In this economy, every job is crucial so that means one more Hoosier is back to work. So we’re thrilled any time we are working with companies who are creating jobs here and investing here.”

Angie’s List spokesperson Cheryl Reed says the company tends to hire workers from Indianapolis and the surrounding areas and it plans to continue doing so in the near future.

“We announced earlier this year that we were going to stay in the downtown Indianapolis area, and we’re thrilled to be able to do that. “Our plans are by 2015, possibly before, to have added up to 500 new jobs.”

The manufacturing sector promised the largest number of jobs. A sizeable portion of the jobs are also coming from 34 companies that plan to move all or part of their operations to the state.
