Future intersection of U.S. 231 & Cumberland Ave to be rezoned

Part of the area around the future intersection of Cumberland Avenue and U.S. 231 in Tippecanoe County may be rezoned.

The Tippecanoe County Area Plan Commission is recommending county commissioners give final approval. The two pieces of property are located on the west side of McCormick Road, north of Lindberg Road.

Current zoning allows only single family homes, but the changes would permit duplex homes, apartments, and other multi-family buildings on nearly 11 acres. Area Plan Commission Executive Director Sallie Fahey says the other 20 acre site would be zoned as “neighborhood business.”

Original plans called for the larger property to be zoned “general business.” However, the commission felt commercial development that designation could allow would have a negative impact on the adjacent Wake Robin Subdivision.

Cumberland Avenue will eventually be extended past the West Lafayette Wal-mart to the U.S. 231 bypass, just west of McCormick Road. Citation Homes is the landowner making the request.
