Former Sen. Evan Bayh (D-IN) served as one of the organizers of a non-partisan political convention held Monday in Manchester, New Hampshire.
The former Democratic senator and governor is on the advisory board for No Labels, a group formed in 2010 to promote ways that Washington politicians can find common ground.
Roughly 2,000 people are expected to attend this week’s events. There are stump speeches from some presidential candidates, but they’re designed to be less partisan - even though Republican front-runner Donald Trump was among those slated to speak to the conference.
Senator Bernie Sanders (D-VT) is the only other presidential candidate with significant poll numbers speaking to the group.
Bayh says both Democrats and Republicans who eschew compromise in the name of ideological purity don't know their history.
"The United States of America and our Constitution was one big compromise,” Bayh says. “The people who gathered in Independence Hall in Philadelphia disagreed on a whole bunch of stuff.”
The co-chairs of No Labels are former Sen. Joe Lieberman (D-CT) and Jon Huntsman, the former Republican governor of Utah.
