Emergency responders deployed to southern IN, Gov. Daniels surveys damage

The District 4 Response Task Force has more than 70 personnel and 30 vehicles in southern Indiana to help in storm damaged areas.

The unit consists of an All Hazards Incident Management Team, a Fire Suppression Element, an Emergency Medical Services Element, a Law Enforcement Element, and Services and Support Element.

Counties represented include: Benton, Carroll, Cass, Clinton, Fountain, Montgomery, Tippecanoe, Warren, and White. Members of the team come from many backgrounds including: Public Heath, Fire Departments, Emergency Medical Services, Emergency Management, and Law Enforcement.

Governor Mitch Daniels is traveling in through some of the hardest hit areas Saturday. Those include Henryville, Marysville, and New Pekin.

In a statement issues Friday night, Daniels says, “Once again Mother Nature has dealt harshly with Indiana. Our every thought is with those we’ve lost and those who have suffered. We’ve learned so much and improved so much in disaster preparedness, warning systems and responder communications but still we are no match for Mother Nature at her worst. We’re hopeful that we know the full extent of the damage but it will be tomorrow before we can give a final report with any confidence.”

At least 18 people are dead following the severe storms that swept through southern parts of the state Friday.
