Dual-Credit Teacher Accreditation On Statewide Agenda

A council of educators and lawmakers will meet next week to again discuss how to deal with a policy change that could limit who can teach dual-credit courses in high schools.

The regional accreditor for Indiana’s colleges and universities had said new requirements for anyone teaching college courses would go into effect fall 2017. That meant Indiana high school teachers would need a masters degree to teach courses with college credit.

State education leaders say the sudden change would decimate the more than 3,400 dual-credit offerings for high school students across the state.

But after concerns from Indiana and other state, the accreditor now says a five-year extension on the policy can be requested. Indiana's Dual Credit Advisory Council will meet Monday at the Indiana Government Center to discuss a fix.
