Democrats pick Thompson as District 7 Senate candidate

A union leader is the Democrats pick to run for the state Senate in District Seven.

Brad Thompson serves as president of Tate and Lyle’s International Brotherhood of Teamsters Local 1070.

He also was president of the Federation of Grain Millers local union 702 at Cargill.

Now, the Delphi resident is looking to take on another role, state senator in the 7th District.

He says will use those experiences leading unions as a building block of his campaign.

"You have the management and the union that don't always agree.  So, what I've learned is how to deal with people that aren't necessarily of the same mindset of me and work through problems and get some solutions that benefit both sides," he said.

District Seven includes parts of Tippecanoe, White, Carroll, Clinton, Boone, and Jasper counties.

Thompson says reversing right to work and enhancing public education funding are his top priorities.

"I think it's time that we stood up for these teachers and we stood up for public education," he said.  "I think that should be our priority, is to restore the cuts that are hurting our schools."

Democrats officially signed-off on his candidacy Saturday afternoon.

Thompson will face Republican Brandt Hershman in November’s election.
