Controversial Rifle Hunting Proposal Up For A Vote

The Indiana Natural Resources Commission will meet Tuesday to discuss the use of high-powered rifles in deer hunting.

Some hunters are frustrated by the current limitations, which keep rifle bullets to the caliber of pistol rounds. That means there isn‘t as much velocity, which means the shots have a shorter range.

But some opponents worry about the safety hazards of bullets that travel longer distances.

Department of Natural Resources spokesman Phil Bloom says the agency received thousands of responses on the issue, evenly divided between those for and those against high-powered rounds.

He says the DNR isn‘t supporting the measure though.

"It's not necessary for deer management," says Bloom. "Didn't seem to be overwhelming opinion one way or the other so we've asked for it to be withdrawn from the rule packet."

The Natural Resources Commission rarely votes against a recommendation from the DNR.

Both Kentucky and northern Michigan allow high-powered rounds.
