China is first int'l trip for Mitch Daniels as Purdue president

Purdue President Mitch Daniels is making his first overseas trip representing the university to China. He’ll leave Saturday and return June 27.

The goal is to meet with current and potential partners in economic and educational initiatives.

One of the existing partners is the Nanshan Group – China’s second largest aluminum company, which has a plant on the south side of Lafayette and has donated $10 million dollars to Purdue. Executives invited Daniels to discuss several things, specifically an aviation project. According to the university, the Nanshan’s long-term goal is to develop a program to train pilots and aviation management personnel.

Daniels also plans to visit partner universities about current research underway and possible new projects. He'll meet with Purdue students studying at both universities and hold two alumni events.
