Event Description

Sattler Self Portrait

“For over forty-nine years my weekly editorial cartoons for the Lafayette Journal-Courier have become a historical collection of both the everyday and unique events of our community. My weekly task was to produce a cartoon that commented on local issues and concerns. Sometimes these were humorous and sometimes not. The cartoons have always been 100% my ideas, my captions, and my art. There was never any input or influence from the editors, although they could refuse to publish them. I preferred it that way. The art has changed as print technology has changed. In the early years, the cartoons were always in a vertical format because that made the layout easier when printing by letterpress. The quality of the printing gradually improved, and that allowed for finer screens to be used for shading in the drawings. When a new Journal-Courier press was installed in 2008 the cartoons had to be in color. That was a learning curve that I had to conquer....quickly. Having the opportunity to draw editorial cartoons for 49 years has been an incredible blessing, honor, and, quite frankly, a lot of fun.” -Dave Sattler- Artists’ Own is honored to exhibit selected items from Dave’s extensive collection. Plus, our customers may purchase a piece of Lafayette history as seen through the eyes of this community gem. The exhibit begins on October 23 and continues through November 11, 2017.
